When I just tried to do it as a new customer, it requires that I buy a SIM card to do a BYOD online. I will try calling later and see what they say if I have my own SIM card already.

Cricket initiates the port request to Verizon. Cricket won't do that for an unfunded account (or one that doesn't exist until you activate their SIM).
