There shouldn't be any damage to the player, it's not supposed to be inserted into the CD player all the way. I have one similar to this one in all 3 of my vehicles and the CD player works flawlessly...

I'm a big fan of the CD slot mount. It's reliable, solid, and easy to remove. I'm not a fan of ratcheting clamps for devices. It tends to be clunky. Better to go magnetic mount there.
