Yeah I had a similar experience doing a TV wall mount. The studs weren't where I needed them so I had to drill a piece of wood between 2 studs to get the mount centered which for a product like this...

I don't think that's the issue... Sometimes studs are offset from where you want them, which I believe was the point. Stud finders are also overpriced and sometimes not reliable. A strong magnet...
