I believe you need either activate the prepaid service, or put a postpaid SIM card in the phone, wait for about an hour, to let ATT block it, and call ATT to forward your BB receipt to let ATT unlock...

Nope, only reason to unlock it is to use on other networks besides ATT and it's subsidiaries. After 6 months of service you can unlock it via ATT or Cricket, according to others in this thread

Yes. Only downside is the validity on loaded prepaid balance.
A $25 reload has a validity of 3 months. That makes it $50 for 6 months.
Not sure if there is a way to extend the validity date...
