The charge goes pending in your account based on invoice (which would have discount). I don't see why this would not work.

I don't think you understood correctly. I don't want to charge my card. I would rather use the balance buy you can't if it covers the entire purchase.

I have the Amex EveryDay Card. You would also need to spend at least $0.01 in rewards point to qualify for the 20% discount.

It's really not a good idea to use more than $0.01 in points on Amazon because redeeming on Amazon is one of the worst redemption values per point that you can get with Membership Rewards.

You can use partial points - I usually use the smallest amount possible since you can get more mileage out of Amex points for use on things like airline miles.
