We've had the 1st generation for a few years now and it certainly works fine without the interwebs... The loss of connection simply causes it to run the last program only. You can't make it turn on...

In the same boat. You need to get 2 of those and hook them through a module which costs another $100. Wish I had stayed with the old orbit system which did 20 zones and still had room for more.
