Not true, unless they changed the rule recently, I traveled to Hong Kong 3 years ago with Canada Air . My 13 and 9 years old sat 2 rows behind my wife and I.

Yeah I just flew Cathay Pacific from NYC to HK and I wasn’t allowed to pick my seat until 48 hours before the flight.

Seats are pre-assign for their ultra discounted fares. You also do not earn One World miles. Not sure about Asia miles. If you want a seat ahead of times, you are looking at the $900+ range...

That's not true. I booked for my mom last night and selected exit row for her. You can't select seat if your fare class is "Economy Save".

We've booked directly with Cathay and you can't pick seats beforehand. They specifically make you wait 24 hours before your flight. They say it's a TSA rule.
