$45 will be credited automatically after activation. I think it should count, but it may still have an expiration date. So you need refill before it expires to keep the pay as you go line active.

Just came to know that you can ask customer service to extend the expiration date of the account balance sothat you dont need to refill further. But YMMV.

If you have a postpaid account you can use this phone. AT&T may lock your account a day after you insert your sim, but just give them a call to provide proof of purchase.
