If you have a postpaid account you can use this phone. AT&T may lock your account a day after you insert your sim, but just give them a call to provide proof of purchase.

If you are planning to use just to get unlocked, I think you may try activating on pay as you go line. Keep it active for 6 months and request unlock to keep the cost minimum.

It should work on post paid account too. But I remember few comments on other threads that their accounts got suspended after using on post paid and they had to call customer care to get it active...

$45 will be credited automatically after activation. I think it should count, but it may still have an expiration date. So you need refill before it expires to keep the pay as you go line active.
