Why would it have to be close to the door? The Lock and the Apple TV independently connect to the router. All you need is a good router that gives you whole house coverage and that's it.

Incorrect. There is no Wi-Fi in the August lock. August locks connect via BT LE to either the Connect or Apple TV.
