34" 21:9 monitor wins hands down! Better for multitasking multiple windows\tasks, tons better for gaming, and 21:9 movies look gorgeous on it. But your going to be paying much more too.

Also, it depends on how powerful your son's gaming computer is? If the Graphics card is a mid range card like GTX 1060 then playing game at 1440P with high settings won't yiled good results.
