While it's a fine approximation since the example had small numbers, it is inaccurate. Percentage discounts rarely (if ever?) stack in such a way that you can just add them. You'd save 13.6%....

When I bought my gift card earlier, it was showing originally 8% off, and the promo code brought it down to 12% off. So you example would be 10% + 4% for a total of 14%.

You are right. 4% plus maybe 1% from a CB site will be about the same. But this deal is useful for those with a minimum spend requirement in order to get their credit card signup bonus.
