As others have said, 16 gauge is very thin, and is really only good for low power lights, etc. See the chart here. Costco has a pack of two 12 gauge 50' heavy duty extension cables with lighted ends...

Looks like a good price, but if you plan to use this as a general extension cord, I'd recommend getting at least a 14 gauge cord....12 is even better.
