Deadbolt on my unit doesn’t work if the backup battery is not plugged in. It should disengage and not function on battery alone, but I don’t see a reason for it not to work if battery is not inserted...

It should fit on the rear seat of most vehicles, and in the trunk of most SUVs/Crossovers/Hatchbacks/etc. If you own a Smartcar forget it, but a Mini or Kia Soul, maybe.
