I have an August Pro. The Pro has Z-Wave and Homekit built-in, so you don't need a Connect, so if you have an Apple TV and or a Z-wave hub like SmartThings or Wink etc you don't need the Connect.

No, you can still use your key from the outside to lock/unlock. From the inside, you can just turn it to lock/unlock. It’s great, I’ve had the previous Pro model (without door sense) since 2+ years.
