That is correct, can only be used at the App/itunes store. And no, Apple store gift cards do not go on sale. I don't even see them at retail outlets where you can sometimes get discounts.

They are only valid in the issuing store's Store. So USA itunes/app card only works in the USA store. Canada itunes only in Canada Japan only in Japan. UK only in UK So hopefully that makes...
