Honestly, I think you're fine with a 3.5mm to TRS cable if you're willing to control the volume through your computer.

Good catch on the Y..... I have used HOSA like this 10 foot one. You just pull on them to separate them as far as you want down to the plug.

Ls50s are better speakers IF you have a room and interest.
I found I preferred the ascend acoustics Sierra 2 speakers with RAAL tweeter over the ls50s, for what it's worth.

Hmmmm. You have to run a mono signal to each of the speakers...so you need 2 cables.
The end that goes to each speaker can be 1/4" Unbalanced (2 conductor), or Balanced.
For the computer end...
