Better to jump on the 3 month deals. Microsoft gives you an extra month for "turning on recurring billing" even if you turn it off.

If it's just for 2 kids and not a 3rd console then you may want to look at setting up the "home xbox" feature. They can share all digital content purchased between their accounts (games, live, etc).
