So are the Mics on this unit much better than a smart phone? I ask because that setup works ok for meetings I don't plan on any attachments, but very interested in the default recording sound quality

Because I own a phone and owned this in the past. There's no comparison to the mics on the tascam vs phone mics which are essentially pinholes. You're not going to get the same range. EVER.

I prefer the DR44wl mainly because of the WiFi and better controls. The DR40 is no slouch though. Price-wise, you can't go wrong with this but I like the DR44 better. The one thing better on the DR40...
