You need a tuner for it to act as a DVR, which is a cometely different product, not an "add on".

I returned mine yesterday. It had buffering issues and the picture quality was not there. I have a Sony X900F and live TV looks great but this made it look awful. I had high hopes but oh well.

Plex and Emby are the closest ones I'm aware of. Plex isn't perfect, but it does most things better than WMC.

As a cord cutter I believe you need a OTA DVR since some shows like the Blacklist, the current season is not on Hulu. One thing to consider is you still need to fast forward through the commercials...

I got the 1 tb model during black friday, works really well. Resolution is supposed to be 720p, i dont notice a difference from my tivo. i think everything right now broadcasts in 720 anyway.

My NAS is 24Tb so size is a bonus. NAS uses less power. iMac would have to be set to never sleep. TV source files are MPEG2 so they are quite large. 1 episode can be 9-10Gb.

No, because you can't take a 1080i/720p signal and convert it to 1080p. Basically, you can only stream in the same "quality" that's being broadcast over the air OTA.
