You are probably better off with lithium primaries (non-rechargeable). These are quite poor for long-term slow draw devices, like a smoke alarm.

if you want to take risk, yes. it should be not a problem to put 1.5v ~ 1.8v charging voltage on 1.2v NiMh battery.
