I purchased the Costco jackets, both the Eddie Bauer and the Marmot, four total for family and NONE had the smell issue. They were neatly packaged in factory sealed plastic wrap. FWIW.

I have one of the 32 degrees jackets and a slightly nicer EB hooded down jacket. I like both, the EB is warmer and feels better made but the 32 degrees is really nice for the price.

Down can easily be 'pulled' back inside the garment by using the inside liner material to grab and pull the down inward. You should expect this in 550-650 down rated garments more than 700-900...
