My theory is that they keep the price on the high side so people don't think they're eating mystery meat when in reality this stuff doesn't cost too much more to produce than potato chips.

if you are looking to get some tasty cheap mold i'd recommend buying bread and forgetting about it for a few weeks. beef jerky mold is a bit better, but it is waaay more expensive.
