I am not too sure about it. I tried two 3200Mhz G.Skill memories on the hp14 laptop. Although the base Jedec has the 2666mhz table entry, the laptop still runs them at 2400MHz.

Cheap Costco HP came with 4gb stick. You could buy this brand of ram 16x1 stick for $55 and add it to your 4gbs. Or just buy the 2x8 and use the 4 stick to cut mad rails. Toot. Toot.

OP, just know that you might get stuck running at 2400mhz. I had to buy the HyperX Impact 2666mhz kit to obtain that speed, since it uses jedec and not XMP on that Cotsco laptop.

2x8GB will give better performance as all the ram will work in dual channel. That might be offset by having more RAM overall if what you're working on does not fit in the 16GB though.
