The fiberglass running kit is way way more effective. Rolled metal fish tapes work best in empty walls and are difficult in any wall or ceiling containing insulation.

You can test the camera alone by connecting it directly to your router and with a 12V adaptor. Use a web browser to log into the camera. If everything is OK, then your NVR is the issue.

You can mix different brands. Having the same camera brand just makes it easier for the initial setup. I use Hikvision cameras and it took me awhile to figure out how to set up the first one.
