I believe they charge you for the gift card, and deduct that amount from the each product. Even if your items get cancelled, your gift card is not free since you already paid for it.

Not sure about the boomerang part. By rule, Target generally doesn't let you use a gift card purchased at a promotional price until the day after, but I admit I've never tried.

Yes, if you died tomorrow and never used the gift card you'd be correct. I boomerang gift cards right after claiming them so in my case, it's half off.
