I thought receivers in this price range have crappy upscalers and you're better off letting the TV do the upscaling? (Unless, it's a Vizio TV which are crappy at upscaling.)

This is true. But it's also easy to fix with a couple replacement capacitors and a soldering iron. I resurrected mine about 3 years ago and it's still trucking along.

I just got the TX-NR686 from best buy for $249. Its latest firmware update also gives it eARC functionality. The only downside vs the SR494 is no 4K upscaling.

Supposedly they have addressed issues now, but yes. They had a really poor reliability record on hdmi ports in their products for several years.

Sounds like it would work well but trust me, CEC doesn't always work right (even if everything is from the same brand). You're better off using the receiver as your "hub".

Some do come with fans. I have a nr-777 that has a built in cooling fan. I wouldn't have bought an onkyo if it didn't have that.

I own several of the newer receivers and have had no issues with cap or hdmi board failures.... I did have handshake issues with the tx-sr353 and 373 models.... there’s some flickering on the screen...

Yes, it should run all that just fine. Those speakers can handle a 90w signal and this receiver can put out 80w per channel so there'd be a minor power increase with a more expensive receiver, but...
