Yeah, those examples are fine. But they're anecdotal and impossible to know what other factors were involved (lots of sweets, not flossing, etc.). No one said flouride or brushing alone completely...

Fluoride is fine but it takes a fair bit of iodine to keep it from gunking up your metabolism over time. I only use fluoride occasionally and I have never had a cavity.
