I shucked it (carefully) and the adapter is soldered on. There is no sata connection. I'm thinking about using it for backups as I was able to reformat, though.

Whoa there. Most bigger or older laptops support 2.5" drives up to 9mm in height. A lot of laptops only support drives that are 7mm in height. I know some laptops (pretty sure older, big, 17" ones)...
