I think that article is about the J and Play models. Both of those have Realtek arm processors. This is the Plus which has a Celeron. It should support hardware transcoding in Plex.

i don't recommend expanding a volume across the DX517. if the DX517 ever loses power for whatever reason, it screws up a lot of stuff and the results are not always pretty (see reddit threads on it)...

No. I think this simplified a lot of things and you don’t have to keep a laptop running and figuring out what apps you have to use for backups. Synology apps are pretty good.
