When you're lifting heavier, the foam in most shoes will collapse and cause stability issues. Many people choose chuck's or other flat bottom, cushionless shoes.

For deadlifts, where you want your foot as close to the floor, correct. For squats, a heel lift often helps especially if you have poor mobility.
