I'd advise to NEVER let it update the firmware. I did on a 7740, and it locked out almost all non-HP refills. I had a hell of a time getting it to accept one. I'll never buy another HP printer.

Don't turn the printer off. Powering on the officejet pros will eat up the inks doing diagnostics. It's better to leave it on.
