as has been discussed before, this needs to be stripped bare to be truly usable. spend a few extra bucks on lodge which is at least usable out of the box, though not perfect either

Some would argue that simply cooking in it is the best way to season it anyways. Each time you cook with some type of oil or fat, you add a thin, additional layer of seasoning.

An oven cleaning cycle will *absolutely* strip off old seasoning. Source - I have done it myself and it works wonders. No need to fuss with a lye bath. That being said, Lodge's seasoning is fine...

Are these usable on glasstop? I ask because some brands have a lip on the bottom so there's a very small area of contact with what it's sitting on. (It's not a flat bottom)
