The one I owned was umbrella-like material. The magnets were very strong (to prevent the wind from pulling it off). So the magnets are inside the material, but they still scratched my car badly.

If you buy this just be careful with the magnets. I had a similar one and when I took the cover off the magnets scraped the paint on my car. Not sure if it was the magnets directly or dirt between...
