As others have said, I bypassed the kiddie rods/reels and bought the *reel* thing for my boys when they each were about 5. They were short 5'6" rods with some Cabela's Fish Eagle spinning reels....

spinning reels get held with the reel below the rod. baitcaster type reels which require use of your thumb go on the top. it doesnt matter if you are right or left handed, the crank is reversible.
