i think it would depend if your filter size is too small for your system...
if you have a 20x20 filter on the same system i have a 24x24 filter i would guess i could use a 11 the same as you can...

Merv 11 will be pretty air flow restrictive compared to a merv 8. If you want better filtration, I'd suggest going with a media filter.

Higher number mean more filtration. Lower airflow though don't use in old houses. Merv8 is good for older houses.
