Not really. The reason why brake fluid needs to be replaced is to remove any moisture that has built up in the fluid. There really isn't any movement of fluid from the reservoir to the caliper.

At that age and mileage I’d definitely recommend doing a brake fluid flush and get some new fluid in there. You also mentioned further down that you want to star doing basic maintenance yourself....

Its ok for most street driven vehicles. Look on your brake cap it should say Dot 3 or Dot 4. This will work in both 3 and 4 systems. But do not top off brake fluid unless you are bleeding them....
