There is only one reason to get a sliding saw over a non-sliding one and that is the extra cut capacity IF you need it for what you do. But, there are many reasons to not get the slider. They...

I have an old Sears Craftsman (Made in USA, I guess) miter saw. When I cut some heavy wood, it leaves some near the base (or close to motor) and sometime the far away end (perhaps, I can solve that...

Sliding miter is better for doing some cross cuts compared to a table saw. Especially if you don't have a table saw, but even if you do. You're just reaching because you made a weird statement and...

Uh, that's why they make sliding compound miter saws. They are the best of both worlds, because you can lock the slide and use it as a compound or use the slide for larger cuts.

Good tip. Since Direct Tools and Ryobi are owned by the same company, I'd much rather go through them for a refurb then from some third party selling on eBay.

This is not sliding and hence you will be limited on cutting a max of 5.5 inches. If your needs are minimum or have a table saw then it is a decent buy.

No, just a basic compound miter saw. Most DIYers won't need a slider (unless regularly cutting >5") and the portability of a non slider makes it more useful in my opinion.
