You have an option to do this. And play in a small map with fewer civilizations. Lower the graphics settings (on pc). You have less options on switch to do this but its capable of running this game

The later rounds are absolutely garbage slow. Takes 15 seconds to do any one action. Game is fine up until everyone has too many units.

Good point. My notebook with an 8th Gen i5 and a 1050ti graphics card sounds like a jet engine when playing 12 Civs and 20 city states and occasionally in late games the system crashes.
