For those just starting, I think you're better off buying a used Ep, Squier, etc. off FB marketplace or the like and spending the money saved on a local luthier to make sure it's set up correctly....

As my childhood guitar teacher told me over 50 years ago, guitar is very popular. If you want to join a band and get gigs, bass is a good option. This is good advice.
