In the Charlotte region, this much is decent quality 'shredded' hardwoods heavily dyed brown, black, or red. It's cheap, it works, and it lasts. YMMV.

As a landscaper this is the best way, or thick layers of newspaper. Don't ever use landscape fabric, that stuff is useless and 30 years later you will still be ripping it out of the ground.
