I measured the actual wood; the cut was 11" horizontal, and 7.25" vertical. There are little notches on the cuts where they overshot a sixteenth. Homemade would explain why they rotted out so...

Good price for these prefabs, I usually cut my own, since stair stringer needs can vary greatly from site to site. Nothing wrong with these if they fit your dimensions nicely. Good find.

I believe $12.98 is the regular price for the 3-step. You're right about the 6-step (I'll edit the OP), though at least my area there are fewer options, whereas there are plenty of 4s and 5s at all...

i've used any combination of 2x4...2x6. etc...what ever looks good plus instead of one large board you reduce the chance of warping...2x12 commands a premium price in most markets

As with all big box store lumber, be sure to check the pieces before you take them home. Check for bad cuts, curvature, fractures, and excess knotting etc. Quality control is not great and associates...

I guess its supposed to be funny, but yes you can by overlapping and staggering connections. There are Simpson Strong Tie connectors for this. Joining 6 X 6 will give you 31 steps. Then you need 3s...

If those can be used, it ia cheaper just buying those from store. Otherwise cutting stringer is must have tech for DIYer. For those building deck or stoop, you may need more than 4 stringers for one...
