Yes, exactly. Consumer drives aren’t meant to be on 24/7. Generally a home users PC will theoretically only be on when they are using it.

I don't understand how an SSD can be optimized for use in NAS? Maybe they are tolerant of higher heat for systems without good airflow?

The only thing I found is this supports HZAT and DRAT which some SSDs do not (who knows which ones). For NAS you would want that though.

NAS cannot really take advantage of NVMe drives. Most people are connecting to their NAS over a gigabit connection. This limits the max speed to 125 MBps. A 7200 RPM HDD is already around 120 MBps so...
