The Samsung 840 was notorious for data degrading for a while there. But yes, harddrives are simply better simply because you can buy almost 6 2TB harddrives for the cost of one 2tb ssd.

SSDs are not a panacea. for the long term storage traditional hard drives are still the best bet. I have a few SSDs that broke in a year.
