I was able to get 3 500gb versions for $40 each at a local Walmart a month ago. It was the only Walmart around that had them on clearance otherwise I would have posted it here. Great drives.

No, the drives are not backward compatible. Sometimes, the motherboard may support either type in a slot or not. Check the documentation/manual for your device.
