It is absolutely bad to over discharge the cells. However, it's my understanding that the tools have low voltage cutoff capability build in so you can't damage the cells. If that helps.

DeWalt calls it an adapter for $40 that has a transformer on the wall plug.... I have never used these on AC with a cord and you are right; apparently, the fan has a built in transformer as well......

You don't need an AC adapter. It has a male plug built into it. You just plug a standard extension cable into it, then plug that into the wall.
