Yes, OT's use broken crayons to build muscle and strength in little hands. Also coloring on coarser surfaces like construction paper, cardboard, and even sandpaper is another strategy.

The best thing to get toddlers to have the proper grip is a broken crayon. Forces them to hold the crayon properly in their fingers.
