using the grass on steroids plugin for verdant and setting your grass density to 50-75 should help with stability, playing with high grass density is known to cause crashes.

Heck in some cases the free high res texture pack looks better than the special edition, skin textures are low res in the special edition but the new water shader does look amazing...

There's are user mods to seriously upgrade the graphics. That's the advantage of having been out so long. They are really milking this game for all it's worth. I personally only 3 or 4 copies of it...
