I have a few generic amazon bands and several Apple bands. To me the biggest difference is the quality of the hardware. The generic bands don’t seem to connect as securely as the Apple bands.

The 44mm will fit a 42mm perfectly, but the 40mm band won't fit perfect. It will go on and work just fine, it just isn't a perfect fit and looks a bit silly.

The quality is actually better, particularly with the “rubber” straps, which aren’t even rubber when they come from Apple. It’s some other rubber like material.
