Be warned that the small is really really small. I don't think a nickel would fit in the tube. Fine for really small tanks but a person could just use a Dixie cup and an ice cream pail.

These don't have a siphon bulb, you have to shake it up and down in the water to get it to flow. I've had this style before and personally wouldn't buy it again.

You're right. When you agitate the water by shaking the tube, you're stirring up debris and amonia. Which is why the gravity method described above is as safe as a one way pump.
