First off, consider buying something that actually list these specs. I'm personally behind the end of a Netgear GSS108E, which is behind a pfSense router itself. Netgear advertises the latency of the...

plastic ones typically eventually overheat. my metal ones have no issues

The problem with these sub $20 switches is the port status LED doesn't provide a visual indication of negotiated link speed (10/100/1000). I had a bad cable once before that caused the link...

I don't like the look of the GS908E, I use the GS308E, picked one up last time it was on sale for under $30. I haven't had any issues with mine, I only use VLANS for my access point so I can segment...

Haven't done VLAN before, but do you just hook up a separate IoT router to the switch, assign IoT devices to that router, and the switch tags all data from that port as IoT? If so, once the data is...

Yeah, just a product line name to catch the attention of unsuspecting IT enthusiasts. There aren't any unique features on this model.

it is true to me, GS308E looks better than GS908E. other consideration GS908E was $15 at one time :-D. indeed, IoT must be separated in to it's own VLAN for security reason. this is just my...

Well under sub 1 milliseconds, much closer to low microseconds. You shouldn't notice any difference in latency with this in between your router and PC.

Every "hop" will add latency as the frames are forwarded to it's destination and back. You could order it, and run the tests you need. Run a "pathping" command to your destination servers and that...

Try again. These specific TP-Link models only have 1 green LED. Look at the manual if you need proof.

Plastic no good?

I'm wondering too. I looked at all the features and they are virtually the same as every other similar switch (auto sensing, "plug and play" (isn't every switch?), "green" tech that may mess...

This is my scenario: If you put not in open air, such as. Shelf with the closed door. You better get metal version for better heat dissipation.

Try to get smart switch that support L2. Usually it has web interface that help me alot for troubleshooting. Other advantages that usefull for me, are vlan, vlan tagging, and bonding.

I use VLANs to separate my trusted and untrusted networks, I don’t let my IOT devices on the trusted network

These switches (I can’t find the full specs on their website, but going by similar switches) likely only add a few microseconds to the latency. 1000 microseconds are 1 millisecond.

Any recommendations for cheap (under $30) managed switches? I picked up some of the Netgear GS908E when they dropped to $17. I just started redesigning my network (separating IOT, phone, test...

you are going to the correct direction :-D. old manage switch is power hunger and generating much heat. I am still using GS724Tv4, and GS724Tv3.

Got a metal one, ditch plastics. Thanks!

People seem to prefer metal due to better heat dissipation, but nowadays these things produce much less heat than they used to so its a moot point. If you're planning to use this as a impromptu...

Edit: Never mind, looks heat dissipation is the factor between plastic and metal version. No functionality difference!

Thanks. Yes the GS908E has a web interface, the VLAN interface much better (IMHO) than the older GS105E. Playing around with about 6 VLANs behind PFSense router. The housing function (hate the...

Funny thing is, the older version of these actually had two lights, one for speed and another for activity. But I guess to cut cost they consolidated to one light.

I have ubiquiti access points which tag vlans based on the ssid they connect to, by using switches that are also vlan capable, you can keep the traffic separate. I’m sure there is a better...

Depends on your distance from the router, how many other devices are coming off the switch & the amount of data.
